Whether you’re investing in a new lounge, recarpeting your home, or just wanting to keep existing furnishings looking good, hiring specialists to apply fabric and carpet protector products should be big on your home maintenance list.
These products are safe for children and pets, and act like a stain-resistant coating on your carpets, couches and upholstery – making it much harder for dropped food and drink spills to seep through and set. Better yet, they save you money, because the right carpet and fabric protection means easier maintenance and a slower rate of wear and tear.
Our friendly team is highly experienced with both solvent-based and water-based protectors, and we’ll assess which application your fabrics need before we start.
Anyone who wants to reduce upkeep and maintain a clean, fresh home or business. For customers with new carpets and furnishings, a protection treatment is a must-have investment – especially for finer fabrics, which can easily attract stains that are harder to remove. Protective sealants are also ideal for parents dealing with kids and multiple spills around the house. If sealants are applied, you’ve bought yourself time to wipe up any food or drink and stop stains from getting deep into the fibres. We recommend re-applying sealant protectors every 6-18 months along with a maintenance steam clean, so you’re getting as much longevity out of your carpets and fabrics as possible.
Here’s what to expect from start to finish.
On your initial call to Sydney Steam Cleaners, our specialists will chat to you about the type of carpet or upholstery you have, whether there are obstructions to deal with, your location and a convenient time for us to do the protection treatment.
New flooring or furnishings typically won’t need cleaning before the treatment, but if yours do, we’ll talk to you about doing a steam clean beforehand, as fabric and carpet protector sealants can’t be applied onto dirty surfaces.
If you need a steam clean, we’ll ask whether you’d like the carpet or fabric protector applied as part of the cleaning process. This involves adding the sealant to the clean water in the machine, and it can be a more cost-effective application option.
When we arrive, we’ll check labels on your upholstery or the carpets we’re dealing with – to find out if they’re synthetics or natural materials. This helps us determine if we need to use water-based or solvent-based sealants.
The treatment can be applied while steam cleaning or sprayed on afterwards using a pressurised sprayer. How long it takes really depends on the size of your home and how many rooms or surfaces need protectors applied.
After we’ve treated your surfaces with the appropriate sealant, we’ll advise you to stay off your carpets or furnishings until completely dry. Opening windows and turning on air conditioning can help speed up the drying process.
We’ve spent over a decade protecting and maintaining the floors and furnishings of homeowners and businesses. That’s because carpeting and upholstery are a significant investment, and we know that correct, on-going care is essential.
Our skilled, friendly team work all over Sydney and are highly experienced in applying appropriate carpet and fabric protection products. We know it can be devasting to invest in fresh new carpeting or finer fabrics for upholstery, only for an accident to happen and a stain to set in. A protection treatment – which is essentially a clear coating – makes it easier to clean up spills promptly and gives you a better chance of removing stains before they set. This significantly extends the lifespan of your flooring and fabrics.
We’re sometimes called out to ‘fix’ a DIY job – where someone has decided to apply carpet protection products themselves. It may be tempting to do the job yourself but if you don’t know how to apply it, you could add too much product to your floorings and fabrics. This stops the fabric breathing and can also lead to the fibres in your carpet or upholstery hardening – damage that’s harder to reverse without a professional steam clean.
My carpet needs a protector product – what’s the process?
If your carpets are new, we can apply the protector straight onto the pile. Dirty carpets need cleaning first, so we may add the sealant product to the steam-cleaning machine. This quick, cost-effective method can also give a more consistent coating.
What types of fabric and carpet protectors are there?
The most common sealant we use is water-based, but for finer or more sensitive fabrics you may have to use a solvent-based product. We’ll always ask you about the fabrics and materials we’re treating before we start.
If couches and carpets have sealant applied, do I need to worry about spills?
Yes. Sealants aren’t bullet-proof, so if you spill something and don’t attempt to clean it up it’ll eventually seep through and stain the fibres in your upholstery or carpets. For this reason, we always recommend cleaning up spills or treating stains as soon as possible.
How long will it take to dry after you’ve applied a protector?
Fabrics and materials have different absorbency rates, so nylon or polyester dries faster than animal or plant-based materials, which tend to absorb more liquid. It’s best to stay off treated surfaces for up to a day, as the sealant won’t work until it’s completely dry.
